The real site

The Liberty was a US Army cargo ship. A Japanese submarine torpedoed her in January 1942, and she was beached at Tulamben, on Bali's north-east coast, so her cargo could be saved. The tremors of Mount Agung's 1963 eruption moved her off the beach. She now lies on her side about 30 m from shore, from a few metres below the surface down to about 30 m. Beginners, and even snorkellers, can see her. You walk in from a beach of black stones, which takes care when the waves are up. Sweetlips, barracuda and groupers live on the wreck, turtles are often around and garden eels cover the sand nearby. It gets busy from July to September, so the early dive is the quiet one.
