The real site
Crystal Bay is a sheltered bay on Nusa Penida, with rocky outcrops and sand from about 5 to 40 m. From July to October, cold water rising from the Lombok Strait brings mola-mola up to the cleaning stations. Crystal Bay gives the best odds in Bali, highest from July to September, though no dive comes with a guarantee. On those days the water at depth can drop to 18 to 21 °C, so a thick wetsuit makes sense. Currents go from moderate to strong around the tide change, so dive it with a guide who knows the site. Reef sharks and mantas pass through too.
